A Lost day.

Today was a lost day, in more ways than one.

I woke up with a stomachache, so I took some pepto and went back to bed. I was still feeling pretty bad, so the short amount of time where I thought I could actually work from home didn’t last, and I wound up back in bed.

I watched some more Lost, which I’ve been downloading. The show is moving a bit slowly for my tastes, and many of the episodes seem downright predictable, which isn’t exactly what you’d want in a show that’s supposed to twist and turn. But anyway, after one or two episodes, I was feeling weak, just lying in bed, but still… so I took my temperature. It was 99.99.

So great, I had a fever. I turned the computer off, drank some water and went to bed.

And that’s where I spent all of today, in bed. My temperature went up to 101.4 at one point, and I was starting to get worried, but that was the high point, and it came back down. I’m back at 98.6 last I checked, and I’m feeling much better. Of course, now, having spent the entire day in bed, my sleep schedule is totally out of whack… which isn’t good, because Friday morning I have to wake up scary early to get to the airport.

The weekend

The three day weekend is over. Poopie.

I spent most of yesterday at home trying to shake off a sinus headache which is still lingering, and had to miss ‘s Mini-Q.

Following my weird inclination to play Super Metroid, I played and beat Super Mario World on Saturday and Sunday. I’m now working through Super Mario World 2. Who needs a PS2 when you have an SNES?

I sorted most of my M:tG cards over the course of the weekend. Damnation, I sure have a lot. It’s like gambling… you don’t spend the money to make money, you’re spending it to have fun. And it’s been fun, really it has. I finally won a prize for the first time in a long long time at the game on Friday night.

It’s weekends like these I’m glad I live with other people. Once you reach critical mass, you don’t have to worry about having to go out to be social, the people come to you. Speaking of which, when’s Nati leaving… hmmm…. that boy played waaaaaaaaaaaay too much Everquest this weekend.

Recent discussion about the future of LJ have gotten me thinking that I really should be contributing to the codebase / maintenance… writing web-based applications is something I… well, I get paid to do it, full time. You’d think I could probably have something to contribute.

I still can’t get over the fact that out of three days off, I spent probably a grand total of two hours sitting in front of the computer. Considering that on a typical evening I spend twice that staring at the monitor I consider it a good thing.

Okay, I just looked at my last name and thought it was spelled wrong when it wasn’t. This is a sign that I should go to sleep. Good night…. or maybe I’ll play some more SMW2…

Kevin Smith MARATHON

Okay, well it wasn’t quite a marathon, but I finally saw Dogma on Friday night, Mallrats on Saturday morning, then watched the sneak preview of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back on Saturday night. (Just like some of you.)

I am so glad I saw Dogma and Mallrats before watching J&SBSB, because the whole movie was one long in-joke (interspersed with way too many homosexual jokes).

The large group of people is back in the house. They all gathered Thursday night, and left Friday morning to go to some big airsoft thing in Reno. No more than 30 minutes after everyone is in the house, and two people are taking showers and everyone’s in separate rooms, the circuit breaker trips… first time in this house. The scary thing is that it didn’t really take much more than we normally use on a daily basis to trip it. We’re livin’ life on the line, baby!

I started to organize my comics again today, but got most of the way through before realizing I’m going to need another longbox.

I was bored earlier today, so I hooked up ye olde SNES and played Super Metroid once through. Damn, I love that game.

Gasoline!

I realized yesterday that the gas gauge on my car was only at half a tank, but then thought back to when I actually bought gas last. It was two weeks ago. At this rate, a tank of gas is going to last me a month.

It’s amazing what not having to drive to Oakland once or twice a week does to save on time and money.

Of course, now that I’m using so little gas, prices have dropped $.40 from the last time I checked.

Mutual dumbassness

So I’m looking at my online bank statement and I see a large charge which I don’t recognize with a check number way higher than my current checks, so I call up BofA and get a customer service representative. She says that sometimes transactions will get assigned arbitrary check numbers if they’re authorized via other means, but I couldn’t remember anything for that amount. So she puts me on hold.

About ten seconds later it occurs to me that it’s the large setup charge for the DSL that I paid via PacBell’s e-bill service, and I wait for the lady to come back on the line, thinking of the way to make myself look the least like a dumbass.

About a minute later I look down at the phone and realize that she didn’t put me on hold, she hung up on me.

Oh well. No harm done, right? I didn’t authorize anything to be cancelled, and this way I don’t have to embarrass myself in front of her.

Dumbass mistakes cancel each other out, and the karma of the universe is maintained.

OmniSky

I just cancelled my OmniSky account (wireless modem for my Palm V). I wasn’t using it enough to warrant $33 a month.

But just two days ago I went and bought 250MB of disk space from Yahoo! Website to store my images on so my DSL doesn’t blow up whenever someone looks at my webpage, so that about cancels out.

But at least now I’m helping keep my employer in business.

No news…

…is good news, I suppose.

I don’t really have much to say, except that I hate Microsoft Networking. But you all knew that already.

Doo de doo.

I think I’m going to start taking Japanese again, if I can find a decent place that has night courses that aren’t introductory level. As I’ve thought about it, I realize that I remember quite a bit more than I thought, and I could probably very easily test into a second semester class.

My right arm is still sore from that time I landed on it funny. I’m gonna have to go see the doctor. The problem is, I can’t remember who my doctor is. I just signed up for one that was close when I turned in my insurance forms three years ago… bleh.

AX Wrapup

So Sunday was the last day of AX, and once again I had to wake up for the morning shift. It was quite uneventful, in fact the day was mostly uneventful until the con was almost over.

Once again, our friend the bulleted list:

  • I had a dream Saturday night. I dreamt that I was in a McDonalds, but for some reason the person taking my order was psychic and handed me my order before I even said out loud what it was. I freaked out and ran, and as I got further away from her, I thought to myself “I wonder how far she can reach” and I hear her say “November 23rd!”
  • I must have been fixating on the smells of the soap, but I noticed that the hand soap in the Hyatt’s bathrooms was banana-scented, and the hand soap in the Renessaince’s smelled sweet, and reminded me of a certain weird cookie that i used to eat at Hebrew School. Must be a cross-wired olfactory memory.
  • For some weird reason, when I’m in Southern California, my phone switches from “AT&T” to “ROAM” and back again repeatedly. I have no idea if that means I’m actually not roaming or not…
  • I was introduced to a new concept yesterday: Wine flavored Pocky. I was so surprised that I was running all over the room shoving the Pocky under people’s noses, saying “smell this!”
  • At the very last minute, I was quite surprised when I ran into ElfEater, who said she’d been at the con the whole time. Of course, I hadn’t been hanging out by the DDR machines, which is probably where she was most of the time. 😛

So I think the themes that we take away from this Anime Expo are weird smells, audio clips, lines, walking and rain.

I’ve gotta go to work tomorrow. I don’t wanna go to work tomorrow. I’ve got a week’s worth of email and work awaiting me tomorrow.

And I still have to unpack…

AX Day Three

It’s all over. I can’t remember if I spilled the beans here or not, but this was 5XL’s last concert. We mean it. And when I say “we mean it,” we mean it more than “this is our last song” and then 30 seconds later break out an encore that we honestly weren’t planning on doing.

It was an effort of passion, something we did because it was fun, we did it for the fans, the glory, but certainly not for the money… ’cause it cost us way more than it made. It was quite a ride, and now it’s time to take a break.

Changing gears, it’s time for some mini-updates.

  • It happened again. A completely different conversation, a completely different situation, and of course, a completely different girl. “My boyfriend” jumps out of the conversation and into my long term memory, a burned-in audio clip that will echo around for too long of a time.
  • So if AX fans line up for hours for an event they already have tickets for, how long do they wait for the tickets themselves? I woke up and went to my staff shift at 8am this morning as was surprised by quite a long line already outside. Little did I know, it was actually the third segment of the line, and the first person had actually started lining up at one in the morning. Insanity. Pure insanity.
  • On the way to the concert, my mom got a flat tire. Only later, I find out it was more than that. Remember that Firestone recall on Ford Explorers? Well, that’s what happened to her; she had defective tires and one of them blew out.
  • So I invited an old high school friend to the concert today. Of course, he was there before the concert, and left early, so he didn’t get to see my mom. Oh well. It was weird seeing him. I also found out that one of the people he still hangs out with that I used to know in high school is now married… and so the ratio goes up.

Only one more day left. It’s been four days, and I’ve built up enough emotional baggage to last me almost half a year… what a vicious cycle. I’ll have just gotten over everything, and it’ll be the convention season again.

Time for bed, I have to get up early again, of course. My feet hurt so much.
