Last night, as I was getting out of the shower, I glanced over just as one of my lego starwars models fell off the top of my shelf. It totally freaked me out.

But anyway… I’m starting to get very frustrated at FFXI. There are so many things that I want to do, some of which I really need to do, but I’m not able to because they require groups of people, and people are either unavailable to do things, or do them when I’m not around. True, I just joined an HNMLS, but I haven’t been able to participate in any of their events so far, because I don’t have my skypass for access to the Shrine of Ru’Avitau. The things I still need other people for that are pissing me off, from greatest to least:

  • Promyvion – Holla. I’ve been stuck on this one forever. I only got Mea and Dem recently, and I’ve died twice in Holla. People are getting through all three and moving on to the next missions, and I’m going to be left behind again on them. I was livid that people did them last night, with very little warning, and I wasn’t around. So now there’s six fewer people in the Linkshell who need it, which reduces my chances of ever getting through.
  • Zilart missions. Having only recently gotten Rank 6, I’ve started this, but haven’t done anything. This is what I need to get my sky pass so I can actually start going to fight gods. Scionith, the leader of the HNMLS, has started organizing a Zilart mission run to get a few of us up to snuff, so this may be happening soon.
  • Further San d’Orian Rank. There are items I want to get with CP at almost every rank up to rank 10. There’s a group who may be getting together next Saturday, but that’s a day that a bunch of people are coming over to my house to watch movies. I’m sorely tempted to just disappear upstairs for a few hours during the day. I’m always the lowest rank person in any exp party I’m in. It’s not functionally hampering me, but it’s still frustrating.
  • Mannequin parts. I’ve had mannequin legs and feet forever. I need to do the BCNMs to get the other three parts so I can finish that stupid quest, but people don’t do them. People may be more likely in the near future, as they’re introducing something in the next patch that requires a complete mannequin.
  • Other BCNMs. I’ve got over 300 beastmen’s seals. Or is it 400? All I know is I just finished another stack of 99. That’s all the seals I’ve ever gotten, minus the unused level 40 orb that’s also been sitting in my mogsafe. There’s a group trying to get a BLMx6 BCNM40 going, which may actually happen today (and I’d be leaving work early to do it because I’m so frustrated that I never get to do things like this).
  • Hornetneedle. Luke needs this too, and he’s just as frustrated about it. I’ve tried killing the Wespes that drop the Bee Larva necessary to spawn Death From Above, but I’ve never gotten one. The two of us may end up just doing it together, although we’ll probably need a third higher-level person to make the fights go easier.
  • Leviathan. I only recently got enough Tenshodo fame to get my Tuning Fork of Water. This one I’m not as worried about, because there’s always incentive for people to redo avatar fights (10k gil per). But then there’s the next one…
  • Fenrir. I’m probably not quite ready to do this, but by the time it comes, getting a group together for it may be difficult… I’m not looking forward to it.

That’s all I can think of, anything else is obviously not pissing me off enough for me to remember. My main problem is that most of the people are on the East Coast, so by the time I’m getting on, there’s only a few hours before they’re going to bed, and that I’m usually doing things on the weekend. So unless there’s something specifically scheduled that I work around, I miss out on most things. All I’ve been able to do recently is just gain experience, and so I’ve gotten ahead of myself. Then, there’s the few times where I’m in an exp party, and something happens I’d want to do, but I don’t want to leave the party. The alternative is to just sit around, doing nothing, waiting for something to happen I can latch on to.

In other words, what happens when you hit level 75. (Or so I’ve gathered from and being bored all the time.)

    1. The most important tip is to not get discouraged by the first 10 levels or so. That part of the game is really more of an introduction where you’re learning how the mechanics of the game work in a solo setting. Those first levels are also easier if you choose a melee-type job. I chose White Mage as my first job and I almost quit the game in disgust at how hard it was to kill things by myself. Once you start partying, the real fun begins, and you get to experience the good and the bad of other players…

Another good idea is to not throw anything away. In those first ten levels, you’ll get all sorts of random junk of the monsters, all of which can be turned into money and fame.

If you don’t have anywhere else to go, let me know and I can shoot you a Phoenix Worldpass, I can help you out once you get to partying levels…

    2. There’s one good piece of meta-advice: get friends.

Obviously, they can help out directly, by joining with you to fight hard things or get difficult items.

But, if these friends are more experienced, their guidance can be useful, giving out tips and shortcuts. It will really make the gameplay that much better.

  1. Don’t give up man. ^_^ You might need a different LS, or one that caters to the west coast crowd. Or at least one that plans things in advance.

    * Promy-Holla. Kite, kite, kite. Get your enfeeble/elemental up and Gravity that sucker. The odds that you’ll succeed seem to be proportional to the amount of money all six of them spend. Get the Echo drops, the Eye drops, the Ethers, and all that. You can do it!

    * Zilart Missions. If you haven’t done ZM1, do it. It’s the best cutscene in the game. The ZMs are hard, and you will die (for one NM in Yuhtunga, it’s faster to suicide). But all 13 can be accomplished in 3 days, if you can find like-minded people who aren’t idiots.

    * Sandy Rank. The guy that gave you those Gamera movies. No, I mean, you might want to camp the spots, or stand in Sandy and look for the shouts. Both 7-1 and 7-2 are Alliance based.

    * Mannequin parts. I have the Garrison ones, not the BCNM ones. The price range is falling on my server, so you might want to farm and craft your way to that. 🙂

    * Other BCNMs. It sounds like you did the Worm one in Palborough. Which is cool for the drops. If you can, find a 40BRD and do the sprout one in Giddeus. If you can sleep them all, and pick them off one at a time, you can be rich pretty fast. We’ve done it with 6, 5, and 4 people. But save those seals. They will be insanely hard to farm when you run out.

    * Hornetneedle. I only know of a THF with Treasure Hunter 2 who has gotten this, so maybe it’s biased in their favor.

    * Leviathan. Levi is puff. You won’t have a problem. Even if you do him three times or four times.

    * Fenrir. It’s okay to look forward to it. But this pretty much requires 6x Level 75. You can do it with 5x 75 and ballast, but the margin gets cut pretty close. You can usually find like minded people those, so you might get to bust out those potions and have fun.

    — But make your HNM LS get you sky access, otherwise there’s no point of getting new recruits. It’s hard and you will get frustrated at the walking, but it’s pretty.

    — And I dunno about being bored. If your HNM LS doesn’t organize well, then yeah. Mine happens to have something each night so it’s pretty jam packed. You’ll need a happy medium.

    Good luck, man.

    1. Yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve doing Holla, one was death on the way up, the other was a death at the BCNM.

Yes, I’ve done the Z1-4 talking stuff, and yes, the Z1 cutscene was awesome.

After I posted this, I remembered the mannequin parts were actually purchasable…

Luke is a THF with TH2, which is why we’ll probably be going after it together.

And the HNMLS I’m in just finished with a big recruiting drive, it’s a new LS that formed from the remnants of an old one, so there was a bit of time spent getting things organized. So it’s slowly getting into the swing of things, learning Times of Death and organizing Sky runs.

But in general the BCNM run yesterday made me feel a bit better… it was just the right thing at just the right time.

      1. Congratulations on Erase. It’s what makes me think I should’ve gone RDM/WHM

And good luck with the Sky runs. Just make sure to buy lots of oils and powders for selling in Ifrit’s.
