Because I have to use this icon every year…

Heh, the LiveJournal banner on top of the page is done up like a ship… I wonder if that’s special for today. On second inspection, the user icons have eyepatches (), so it must be. … It also says “Update Captain’s Log” on the submit button. These guys have way too much time on their hands.

Anyway, stuff is happening. Working, FFXIing, Magicing (Time Spiral Prerelease this weekend, joy!).

My car is getting considerably dirtier because of all the trees in the parking lot here at work or something. What’s kind of funny is that almost every single car in the lot is filthy, so I’m not alone. One of them has “PLEASE C” wiped into the dirt on the back, I’m guessing that’s as far as someone got into “PLEASE CLEAN ME” before they chickened out and ran away. On a similar note, I saw the car with the license plate “WASH ME” again on the way back from work, almost in the same spot.

FFXI is moving along slowly. I haven’t been putting as much time into my chocobo as some other people, and I got started late so I know when to expect certain things. In two days, my chocobo will be ridable! Yay! I’ve got my Paladin up to 71 now, and I decided to take up Woodworking so I have a “real” craft, and eventually useful to repair Lu Shang’s Fishing Rods in the field. Most of the crafts I’ve been doing so far have been break-even or profitable… in theory, if they ever sell on the AH. I got undercut on Uchitake by 1,000, and I still have 5 bundles to sell. I think I’ll hold off listing the last few so that the number listed doesn’t go too high, encouraging people to undercut even further. Of course, the last few times I’ve been spending crafting have been cutting into my fishing time, so that’s sort of counter productive…

Virtual downward spiral

Ever since I’ve started working again, I’ve had (gasp!) less time for FFXI. I’ve fallen into routine, where Mondays and Thursdays I’m doing Limbus, Mondays and Fridays I’m doing Assault. Tuesdays I play Magic, so that only leaves Wednesday during the week, which I’ve been usually spending fishing for moat carp. I tried doing the bulk of my other stuff on the weekends, but it’s hard — there’s so many more people on then, because they’re all in my situation. Leveling PLD has been very hit or miss on the weekends, I can sit for hours waiting for an invite, or sometimes I get one before I even put my invite flag up. And I’m done leveling it for a while, got to 70 and have to take a break, because of the part that’s getting me depressed:

Damn, this got long.

More FFXI fun

Been playing mostly Kingdom Hearts II inbetween FFXI, haven’t touched WoW in a while except for Molten Core on Saturdays. Been very gradually doing the chain of missions and quests necessary to “finish” the Chains of Promathia story (which involves having to actually beat Rise of the Zilart, then do a badass BCNM that meshes both storylines) I finally have this to show for it:

Also, been doing Limbus still, and we tried a new zone on Monday. Got all the way to the top, then ran out of time. We tried the same zone again today, but with a few more people, and me as BLM instead of RDM (we finally have a third RDM, yay), and we got to the top floor with 35 minutes left. Of course, the level is set up this way because at the top is a big, bad behemoth. Time is running down, we’re getting knocked around by his constant Meteor casting, I’ve already died and reraised twice, and he’s at a sliver and time is counting down…

Go go zombie BLM power!

In happier news…

Fortunately, before the spammers decided that I’d be a really good target for pharmaceutical emails, it was our Chains of Promathia night in FFXI. It started as a group of about 12 people and we’ve been meeting every Friday night for a few months now. Our numbers dwindled down, and we stabilized at 7. This, of course, meant we had to many things twice, as a lot of the fights are capped to 6 people per fight. But we all knew each other, so we weren’t cutthroat and cut anyone loose. We just had to make sure we were good enough to handle it.

And we did. Compared to what it sounds like other groups did, we had surprisingly little resistance working through the missions. Part of this was because we had some incredibly flexible job selections to work with, almost everyone in the group had at least 2, if not 3 or 4 jobs at 60+, and quite a few with multiple 75 jobs. Two weeks ago, we did the airship fight (6-4), one of the hardest fights, if not the hardest fight, and beat it on our third attempt. Then we did it again last week for the seventh member and only had one false start.

That meant that today was 7-4 and 7-5. 7-4 is just a bunch of random NMs that are uncapped (as is everything from this point, yay… no more using level 60 gear), then 7-5 is another “kill kill kill fast fast fast” fight. We died a few times, but switched a bunch of jobs around and managed to kill him… what’s that mean?

Yes, what’s that mean?

Patch day!

So, what have I been up to? Let’s see the last time I updated… oh besides the animal crossing post… wait, never mind I’ve pretty much been playing video games all day long.

I got Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time out of the way. Now I have the unholy combination of FFXI, WoW, Dragon Quest 8, and Animal Crossing to sink my time in to. Out of the four of those, only DQ8 has a conceivable ending, and that’s probably a good 70 hours away. The rest I could keep dumping more and more and more into and keep having more to do.

However, my honeymoon with WoW may soon be ending. It’s been fun, but mostly because I’ve been able to do things by myself. Every time I try doing things with other people, a) things go less smoothly b) things get more hectic and c) people die more often. And currently, my quest log has 10/16 quests that are (Elite)… which means I have to do them with other people. I’ve been working on various other things, I got fishing to 225 and started the uncap quest and got cooking to 300. But right as I did that, I was able to connect FFXI to the update server…

Today’s FFXI update is a very significant one. It fixed some very major things:
FFXI rambling again…

Puppy?

What was I just saying yesterday? How there was that one last thing that had been sitting undone in FFXI that was taking forever? That’s right, Fenrir. I got an invite from Funnyginman, a Dragoon in my Linkshell. They needed a Black Mage, and were fine with me only being 65. (They just needed someone to Stun and magic burst, I guess.)

Party setup was NIN75/WAR37, DRK75/NIN37, DRG75/THF37, RDM75/BLM37, WHM70/BLM30, BLM65/RDM32 (me). So, as the only person who actually knows his way around Horutoto and Toraimarai, I guide them to Full Moon Fountain. We went in and were doing great, the DRK and I were alternating stuns back and forth. Then, the Dark Knight went down, turns out he forgot to actually use Utsusemi: Ni before fighting. (oops.) The White Mage Raise II’ed him on the fly, but not too long after that… Howling Moon and 4 of us go down… and the other 2 aren’t far behind. And all during the fight, I was only good for stunning. I couldn’t land anything unresisted.

Three minutes later, we all pop out, dead in a pile. Well, we have an idea…

I return to my homepoint. (I’m now only 85 exp into BLM65… heh.) I switch to RDM75/DRK37. I run through the shortcut, because I have that quest done, raise the White Mage, who then Raises everyone else. The Ninja warps back to town to get his evasion gear, (and I warp back to get my RDM AF, I accidentally grabbed my BLM AF… stupid “Warlock’s armor” and “Wizard’s armor” are so similar in name. We eventually reconvene (after guiding two other members back the long way) and go back into the fight.

The second fight.

A busy day in FFXI

I’ve been spending even more time in FFXI than usual, but I’ve been getting even more things accomplished.

Woke up today and headed to Kirin again. We beat two in less than three hours, which is pretty darn good. It probably had something to do with the large number of Black Mages we had up there. But hey, Red Mages can nuke, too:

(Of course, that was right as it died, and immediately afterwards, Scionith Mijin Gakure’d and made it go boom.)

The big thing to come out of the fights (at least for me) was that a Wyrmal Abjuration: Legs dropped, and I had the winning bid. I was pretty sure I was ahead of everyone on points that was interested, so I was so happy when it dropped.

Of course, I now have 10 points left… I bid myself down to 0, and got the 10 points for the two Kirins today. It’s a good thing there isn’t much left I want… until I get BLM up to the high levels… oh, wait. That’s right, Black Mages get even less from Sky mobs than Red Mages.

Parallel to this, waking up today, I noticed that, for the first time in a long while, San d’Oria was in first place. What did this mean? I spent all 78,000 of my Conquest points. (A Kingdom Aketon, a Royal Knight’s Belt and a Signet Staff) I did this right before I got my Cuisses, so running around San d’Oria with both the Aketon and the cuisses on for 24% movement speed was fun. But anyway, I wandered down to the Federation of Windurst and submitted my application for citizenship.

So I lost all my outpost warps, and I had “memories sealed away.” (The game’s way of explaining away how you can manage to do the same bit of overlapping storyline twice.) I waltzed my way through the first 2 ranks’ worth of missions, then came to the big stumbling block: The rank 2-3 dragon.

It’s a level 25 capped fight, so even though I’m level 75, I can’t overpower my way through like I’ve been doing and am likely to do for another 3 ranks. But I’d seen a video online of a RDM25/NIN12 soloing the fight, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I bought a bunch of top-notch level 25 gear and consumables and went into the fight…

And proceeded to run out of time because I didn’t damage it fast enough, got petrified twice and paralyzed once.

I grumbled and watched the video again. That person didn’t get hit by petrify or paralyze! I must have had some dumb luck. I tried again, this time with more mp regen instead of ethers, nuked more…

Victory in 7 minutes 30 seconds… half of the allotted time. And I didn’t even need any ethers or potions… the food was enough. I went back and got my Rank 3, and now I need to get store all this gear and consumables… and slyly slip ‘s Emperor Hairpin and Winged Boots that I borrowed for the fight back into his account.
