The Great Laptop Fiasco of 2008: Part 2

So I took my laptop into the Genius Bar today and the guy there basically told me what I already suspected: it’s likely a problem with the logic board on my PowerBook. Since I really kind of needed this computer as a secondary, and I’m not quite ready to buy a new MacBook Pro yet, I’m going to get it repaired. But first, I have to backup the data from it.

But since the computer isn’t working I have to take the hard drive out, put it in an enclosure, and hook it up to another one of my Macs and copy the data. But I don’t have another hard drive around that’s big enough to hold all of that data, so I have to buy one. And I can’t find either of my 2.5″ enclosures, I think might still have them. I do have a 3.5″ enclosure, though. So I could get a 3.5″ drive that’s like 300GB and really cheap and it would work.

As funny as it would be to walk into Fry’s and buy a 3.5″ drive and a 2.5″ enclosure and see if anyone noticed.

  1. Just so you’re aware, a new logic board goes for $1000 MINIMUM.

I just had my logic board replaced in my MacBook, and it came to $1100… I’m glad I have apple care.

I’ve also had a logic board replaced in an Intel iMac, and it came to $1000. I’m only going to assume it’s going to be more expensive for a Powerbook.

One thing to keep in mind.

    1. esrolie is correct, if you don’t have AppleCare then you are better off getting a new Mac Book or Mac Book Pro. Apple just refresh MacBook, maybe just get that instead of MBP.

But if the software you have is not compatible with the intel macs, perhaps go to Weird Stuff and see if they have used parts.

      1. Ugh. I guess the $340 the guy mentioned was the minimum charge? I could have sworn he said flat rate, but that might just be for the labor, not the parts.

So yeah, I get an 8% discount through Yahoo!, but I’m wondering if there’s a better deal out there… *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*

        1. hmm well if he said that is a flat rate then he should honor that and fix your g4.

I do have a employee discount but I can only use it once a year for computers and I am looking at getting a 24″ imac :P. However I do have friends and family which is 15% and we could meet up at the Corporate Store on some Friday (It is only open 9-5pm m-f) to get your replacement.

  2. Fry’s is not likely to notice anything – they’re the ones who gave me standard PC DDR2 RAM for a MAC PRO TOWER, after I specifically asked if they carried RAM with FB-DIMM specifications.

…and then the “DDR2” stick they gave me had been swapped with a burned-out DDR1 IN THEIR CAGE.

Believe me, Fry’s will not notice.
